We have compiled this information leaflet to give you and your partner a piece of detailed information about labour and birth in water.
Water birth means at least part of your labour, delivery, or both happen while you’re in a birth pool filled with warm water.
The soothing sensation and relaxing effect of water, with its support and warmth, plays an important role as your labour progresses. Being immersed in water enables you to simply go with your contractions, especially once you’re in active labour.
Being relaxed also helps you to breathe calmly. Once you're in the warm waters of the pool, you're in your own world and can proceed with your labour, undisturbed.
Using a birth pool for labour is often such a positive experience, that many mums want to experience it again for their next baby.
The benefits of labouring and giving birth in water include:
Research suggests that for healthy women with normal pregnancies and in full-term labour (after 37 weeks gestation) using the water for labour and birth is as safe as for land birth. Healthy babies who cope well with labour can be born in the pool without any complications to the baby.
In situations where your midwife or doctor feels that your baby is distressed or compromised during labour, they will advise you not to deliver your baby in the water.
For healthy women, the complications with labouring in water are seemingly rare. A concern for some people is that the baby will breathe while still under the water - this is highly unlikely as there are many mechanisms to prevent any untoward incident. One of which is the drop in temperature that usually occurs when a baby is born. But at Burjeel Hospital, the water temperature is carefully monitored throughout the labour to prevent the drop.
If you are healthy, between 37 to 42 weeks pregnant with no severe medical conditions or complications, and have a history of completely normal labours; then you are suitable for water birthing.
At Burjeel Hospital, we take every responsibility for your comfort and care. As the water temperature is one of the most important factors in water birth, our staff makes sure that the water temperature is regulated as per your needs. The midwife also keeps a check on your body temperature along with the room temperature.
We believe that the best time is when your labour is established.
As the delivery time approaches, you will know whether to deliver your baby in the pool or outside the water. During the delivery process, you will be assisted by the midwife and the doctor. Babies born in the water tend to have their eyes open and be calm. Sometimes the baby may take a short time to become pink. This is because of the gentle and normal birth experience.
The patient will be asked to leave the pool to deliver the Placenta.
To preserve the benefits of labouring in the water we will try to create a calm, unhurried and relaxed atmosphere. We will encourage you verbally when necessary and disturb you as little as possible at other times. We will need to listen to your baby’s heart rate and regularly check your temperature, pulse, and blood pressure. At Burjeel Hospital, we will do a short admission trace of the baby’s heart rate, before entering the pool. You will have to leave the pool under the below circumstances.
It is important that you feel relaxed and in control during labour. So, the choice of what you wear is very much personal. Some women like to be naked when they give birth and find clothing gets in the way. Others feel more comfortable if they are wearing a T-shirt or bikini top which covers their body. You may want to bring a dressing gown or a large towel from home because you can become cold very quickly if you need to leave the pool for any reason.
